Interior Crew maintain all crew and guest interior areas, and manage guest service operations. Duties include high end hospitality services such as food and beverages, valet, spa management and other specialist activities, as well as housekeeping duties. Previous hospitality experience is beneficial, however not essential for those looking to start out in a new career.

Training, Courses, and Certifications

  • STCW Personal Survival Techniques (STCW A-VI/1-1) Valid for five years, requires refresher training
  • STCW Fire Prevention and Fire Fighting (STCW A-VI/1-2) Valid for five years, requires refresher training
  • STCW Elementary First Aid (STCW A-VI/1-3)
  • STCW Personal Safety and Social Responsibilities (STCW A-VI/1- 4)
  • STCW Proficiency in Security Awareness (PSA) (STCW A-VI/6-1) or
  • STCW Proficiency in Designated Security Duties (PDSD) (STCW A-VI/6-2) Either qualification is acceptable, however if you are expected to take a watch on board regardless of position, it is beneficial to take the more advanced qualification PDSD.
  • About the IAMI GUEST Hospitality Programs
    The International Association of Maritime Institutions (IAMI) provides Accredited Yacht Training through the IAMI GUEST Programs (Guidelines for Excellence in Superyacht Training). The IAMI GUEST Programs are the internationally recognised large yacht industry qualifications and assessment standard. They include a number of specifically designed Programs, available in worldwide locations, that support the occupational duties, roles, and responsibilities of onboard yacht crew, from entry to management level.The GUEST “Hospitality” Programs are designed to inspire and develop a wide range of practical, technical, and soft skills and all aspects of knowledge required for the various onboard interior crew positions.

    Please note that entry prerequisites of prior learning or evidenced experience are required before attending some of the more senior programs.

  • Recommended GUEST Training for Entry-Level Interior Crew Positions
    We recommend the GUEST Yacht Hospitality Introduction Program for all Junior Interior Crew. Relevant courses include Introduction to Yachting & Yachting Life, Basic Housekeeping & Laundry, Basic Food & Beverage Service and Basic Wine & Mixology Service.
     For Junior Food & Beverage Service Crew, we recommend the GUEST Yacht Hospitality Introduction Program. Relevant courses include Introduction to Yachting & Yachting Life, Basic Food & Beverage Service, and Basic Wine & Mixology Service.
    For Junior Housekeeping Crew, we recommend the GUEST Yacht Hospitality Introduction Program. Relevant courses include Introduction to Yachting & Yachting Life and Basic Housekeeping & Laundry.
     For Junior Laundry Crew, we recommend the GUEST Yacht Hospitality Introduction Program. Relevant courses include Introduction to Yachting & Yachting Life and Basic Housekeeping &

  • Recommended GUEST Training for Specialist Positions
     For all Laundry Interior Crew, we recommend the GUEST Yacht Advanced Hospitality Program. Relevant courses include Yacht Interior Administrations and Advanced Laundry Service.
    We recommend the IAMI GUEST Yacht Specialist Hospitality Program &/or GUEST Yacht Spa Management Program for Specialist Interior Crew. Relevant courses include Introduction to Yachting & Yachting Life, Yacht Spa Management, Floristry & Plant Maintenance, Advanced Cigar Service, Barista & Hot Beverages,Advanced Wine Appreciation, and Advanced Bartending & Mixology.
  • Recommended GUEST Training for Advanced Level
     Crew holding Steward/ess & 2nd Steward/ess positions should aim to complete the GUEST Yacht Advanced Hospitality Program. Relevant courses include Yacht Interior Administrations, Advanced Food & Beverage Service, Advanced Laundry Service, Advanced Housekeeping Service, Advanced Valet Services, and Foundation Leadership.
     The Head of Food & Beverage Service should aim to complete the GUEST Yacht Advanced Hospitality Program. Relevant courses include Yacht Interior Administrations, Advanced Food & Beverage Service, and Foundation Leadership.
    The Head of Housekeeping should aim to complete the GUEST Yacht Advanced Hospitality Program. Relevant courses include Yacht Interior Administrations, Advanced Laundry Service, Advanced Housekeeping Service, Advanced Valet Services, and Foundation Leadership.
  • Recommended GUEST Training for Management Level
    The Chief Steward/ess or Interior Managers should aim to complete the GUEST Yacht Hospitality Management Program. Relevant courses include Yacht Interior Administrations, Destination, Event & Interior Management, Human Resources & Crew Wellbeing, Accounting, and Bookkeeping & Budgeting.
  • About the Interior Training Record Book:
     The GUEST Interior Training Record Book (Int TRB) encompasses a wide selection of tasks and assessments targeted and relevant to the interior department. The Int TRB also includes the MCA Yacht Rating Training Record Book, available to all interior crew, and supports the application for the issue of the MCA Yacht Rating Certificate, which is a manning requirement to be part of the bridge watch-keeping team.
     The Int TRB is designed to support Junior Crew’s progress in their roles and prepare candidates to attend the GUEST Advanced Hospitality Training Program.
     The Int TRB provides an easy-to-use guide and training plan to support senior crew to deliver the necessary mentoring and onboard training to their junior teams.
  • IAMI provides opportunities for those who complete a full GUEST Hospitality Program to apply for the GUEST Certificate of Competency (CoC).
  • The CoC is awarded at Junior, Senior, and Chief Steward/ess levels, as well as for the Yacht Purser, and demonstrates to employers that a good level of competence has been achieved for each relevant onboard position.
  • Candidates can apply to IAMI for their GUEST Certificate of Competence (CoC) following the successful completion of all the relevant units contained within:
    GUEST Yacht Introduction Hospitality Program (leading to Yacht Junior Stew. CoC)
     GUEST Yacht Advanced Hospitality Program (leading to Yacht Senior Stew. CoC)
     GUEST Yacht Management Hospitality Program (leading to Yacht Chief Stew. CoC)
    GUEST Yacht Purser Program (leading to Yacht Purser CoC)
  • The CoC application may require additional documentation such as evidence of Sea Service, STCW Safety training, medical fitness certificate (ENG1), and Food Hygiene or Safety certification.
