Deckhand
Recommended Time In Role
Ideally, an established Deckhand should stay in their role for one-two years/two seasons (six months of sea time) before considering advancing their career. This is the length of time needed to perfect the skills to be a strong Deckhand and the minimum amount of experience needed for more senior roles.
Mandatory Qualifications
To be eligible to be an Deckhand, all candidates must have STCW Basic Safety Training A-VI/I.
Recommended Qualifications
The strongest candidates will also be working toward their RYA Tender Operator, as well as having completed their MCA Efficient Deckhand (EDH), which requires a minimum of six months of sea time.
Recommended Experience
Successful candidates will ideally have proficiency in all deck duties, tender driving, and water sports.
Notes
MCA EDH (referenced above in recommended qualifications) is required to be held for 18 months before Deckhands can obtain Officer of the Watch (OOW). To obtain OOW, the pre-requisite is 36 months of yacht service and 365 days sea time. In addition, Deckhands must hold an RYA Yachtmaster Coastal (or greater, sail or power) and valid TRB.
